I’m Nolan Bélangère, a first year student at uOttawa. I study Geography and my first couple weeks were nice, and I slowly got used to this new environment. I chose this field because of the things I’ve done when I was younger. I was born in France and traveled from a young age to many countries such as the United States, Mauritius, Australia and now Canada.
I remember Australia pretty well as I stayed there 6 years, basically all my teenagehood. Something in Australia that I did a lot was being around nature, and I wanted to become a park ranger at some point. For most of the time I was there, I had a garden, I went to the parks a lot, I did road trips, participated in the ranger club, it’s also where I got an interest in weather due to the interesting weather patterns there.
Before coming to Canada, I went to Chicago, USA, for a year and I got to see what living in a big city was like. I saw a lot of architecture during my time there, and I wanted to be an architect for a short while. Working in Geography and being an architect could sound like two different fields but it’s quite intertwined.
Here is where we get to Urban Planning, a great middle ground, as we have the land and environment but also human activity and cities. This is an important field of work these days due to environmental challenges and the ever evolving construction projects. Geography is a good start to reach my goals and I should take the microprogram in Urban Studies at uOttawa to grasp more knowledge in Urban Planning. I might need to take a Master’s at some point, but for now I need to start my Geography degree!
